Grand Valley State (9-5, 0-1) was unable to recover from a Gannon (3-4, 1-0) five-run first inning and dropped a 6-5 decision Saturday. Game two was halted due to darkness and will be part of a three-game day on Sunday.
The big blow in the top of the first inning was a Frank Armeni three-run homer as the Knights jumped out with a five-run first. GVSU scored one in the bottom of the second with a Matt Wright solo shot to left, however, Gannon scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the second when catcher Nick Leslie smacked a solo homer of his own to left field. GVSU scored three in the top of the third with four hits. Tony Pfennig, Kevin Boyd and Elijah Beckwith each recorded RBI doubles as the Lakers closed to within two (6-4). GVSU loaded the bases in the top of the fifth, but was able to just score one run on three hits in the inning. The Lakers threatened again in the top of the seventh as Tony Pfennig walked and Joe Brunink singled, hoowever, Gannon sealed the win with a 6-4-3 double play.
Mixter was tagged with the loss after yielding six runs on four hits with six strikeouts in four innings. Jason LaBaumbard pitched two scoreless innings for GVSU. Brunink led the offensive attack with three hits, while Beckwith and Pfennig each tallied a pair of hits.
