Grand Valley State junior pitcher Phil Mixter recorded a career-high 14 strikeouts and yielded six hits in eight innings of work as the Lakers claimed an 8-5 victory Salem International Saturday. GVSU improved to 8-3 with the win.
Salem International opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a single run, but the Lakers came back to score two in the second and three more in the top of the fifth. GVSU sealed the win with one run in the seventh and then two more in the top of the ninth. The Lakers pounded out 14 hits on the afternoon.
Sophomore third baseman Scott Allen led the offensive attack with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored on the day. Allen singled, doubled and hit his team-leading fourth home run of the year. Junior first baseman Joe Brunink homered and drove in two runs with two hits, while sophomore right fielder Joe Mertes also picked up three hits on the day. Junior leftfielder Kevin Boyd and senior shortstop Tony Pfennig each collected two hits.
Grand Valley State will play doubleheader Sunday afternoon against West Virginia State.
