Grand Valley fell, 9-0 against Wayne State in its first GLIAC match of the season Sunday. The Lakers traveled to the Peachtree Tennis Club in Mt. Clemens for the conference match up.
Desmond Early won his first match at number one singles, 6-2, against Sebastien Foka, but then dropped the next two, 6-4, 6-4.
To start off their spring season, GVSU also competed in the Grand Rapids City Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Early won number one singles by defeating Scott Gregory from GRCC (6-0, 6-2) and Nate Price from Aquinas College (6-1, 1-6, 6-3).
Other Lakers picking up wins in the tournament were sophomore Pete Schwallier (#2 singles), freshman Kyle Dehne (#3 singles), and freshman Nick Cron (#6 singles). Senior Desmond Early and junior Matt Young also won a match at number one doubles.
Grand Valley will host St. Joseph's on Saturday, March 1 at 1:00 p.m. The Lakers will then head to Hilton Head, South Carolina for spring trip in which they will play six matches.
