Grand Valley State gave #4 Michigan Tech a run for their money but did not have enough to pull off the upset as the Lakers fell 76-64 at the Fieldhouse Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers cut the MTU lead to 51-50 with 11:00 minutes remaining in the game and the score remained the same for four minutes as neither team could get a basket. The Huskies then regained control and hit 13 of 14 free throws down the stretch to ice the victory. Senior Jason Bauer led the Lakers with 22 points and eight rebounds. GVSU falls to 9-11 overall and 4-8 in conference play while MTU improves to 20-1 and remains perfect in the GLIAC at 12-0.
The Lakers did not shoot the ball well but used an excellent rebounding effort to stay in the game. GVSU hit only 35% of its shots but pulled down 21 offense rebounds, while holding the Huskies to only five.
Bauer was 10 of 19 from the field and added three steals on the day. Courtney James scored 18 points with five assists and Justen Naughton tallied nine points.
Grand Valley will host Northwood in a GLIAC contest on Thursday (Feb. 6) at 8:00 pm in the Fieldhouse Arena.
