Grand Valley State claimed an impressive 97-89 overtime road victory over 17th-ranked Ashland University Thursday (Jan. 10) evening. Grand Valley State improves to 7-7 overall and 3-4 in GLIAC action, while AU falls to 12-3 overall and 4-2 in GLIAC play.
Freshman guard Courtney James hit three free throws with 1.2 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime tied at 84-84. James was fouled while attempting a three-pointer. GVSU went on to outscore AU 13-5 in OT and claim the win. GVSU trailed Ashland 83-76 with 1:45 remaining and the Eagles were set to clinch the win with :08 seconds left when Isaac Kinkade was fould and went to the line for two free throws. Kincaid, an 85 percent shooter from the line, promptly missed both and set up the heroics by James.
James led GVSU with 20 points, including a perfect 11-11 from the charity stripe. Jason Bauer and Melvin White each added 17 points, while Nate Bassett and Justen Naughton scored 10 and 12 points, respectively. GVSU shot 46 percent from the field and converted 31-of-38 free throws on the evening. GVSU also connected on 10 three-pointers and outrebounded AU 42-32. Grand Valley State outscored Ashland 40-15 from the bench. Isaac Kincaid led the Eagles with 25 points, while Angelo Edwards added 24 points.
Grand Valley State will return to action Monday, Jan. 13 for a 7 p.m. contest versus Michigan-Dearborn.
