Grand Valley State earned a 74-65 victory over Hillsdale College on Saturday at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. It was the third straight victory for the Lakers, including two in a row in conference action. Justen Naughton scored a game high 24 points while Melvin White tallied a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. GVSU is now 6-7 on the year and 2-4 in the GLIAC, while Hillsdale falls to 7-5 on the season and 0-3 in conference play.
The game went back and forth in the first 10 minutes of play with the teams exchanging leads three different times. But the Lakers went on a 9-2 run to jump out to an eight point lead with 6:52 remaining in the first half, a lead GVSU would not give up the rest of the way. The Lakers led by as many as 12 to start the second half, but Hillsdale fought back to tie the score at 51 with 8:28 remaining. Less than four minutes went by before the Lakers were back up by 8 and in control the rest of the way.
Naughton shot 8 of 13 from the field and pulled down nine rebounds, while White was 3 for 3 from behind the three point arc. Freshman Jeff Grauzer scored 14 points and added 5 rebounds, while Jason Buaer tallied 9 points and 11 boards.
The Lakers travel to Ashland for their next contest on Thursday, January 9, at 7:30 pm.
