Grand Valley State completed a sweep of the three GLIAC teams in the U.P. with a 3-1 (32-30, 28-30, 30-19, 30-16) victory over LSSU on Sunday in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Sabrina Bird led the Lakers with a career high 20 kills and a .548 attack percentage. It is the second straight season the Lakers have defeated MTU, NMU, and LSSU on the road, after not completing a single U.P. sweep since 1987. GVSU improves to 12-1 (3-0) on the season and is ranked #5 in the AVCA Top 25.
GVSU tallied four-game season highs with 77 kills and 15 blocks in the match. Bird tallied double-digit kills for the second straight game and broke her previous career high of 14 kills which she did against Southwest State earlier in the year. Bird also tallied five blocks on the day. Elisa Joris led the team in blocks with eight and tallied 12 kills, while Carly Miller added 13 kills. Chara Fehsenfeld recorded 23 digs and Nicole Bayle registered 56 assists.
The Lakers will host GLIAC foes SVSU on Friday, Sept. 27, at 7:00 pm and #18 Northwood on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 4:00 pm.
