10th-ranked Grand Valley State improved to 13-0 on the year with an impressive 73-64 victory over Great Lakes Valley rival Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday (Dec. 29) in the second game of the Hillsdale College Rotary Classic. The 13-0 start is the Lakers' second-best start to a season. The 1997-98 Laker squad started 16-0 en route to a 23-5 season.
GVSU led by as many 17 (38-21) in the opening 20 minutes and went into the lockerroom with a 38-25 lead. Wisconsin-Parkside cut the Laker lead down to nine (52-43) with 11:24 left in the game, however, GVSU went on an 11-1 run over the next 3 1/2 minutes to build their largest lead of the game (63-44) with 8:07 left. Cori Jewett it two three-pointers and Jennifer Nielsen one in the decisive run.
Julie Zeeff led four Lakers in double figures with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Laurie Rehmann and Cori Jewett each chipped in 15 points, while Jennifer Nielsen added 13 points. GVSU shot 56.5 percent from the floor (26-46) and 62.5 percent from the three-point line (10-16). The Lakers held UWP to just 31.4 percent from the floor (22-70) and 21.4 percent from the three-point line (6-28). Sammy Kromm led the Rangers with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Jamie Nebel added 18 points.
Grand Valley State will return to action Thursday (Jan. 2) at home versus Wayne State. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
