Men's Basketball Win's 2002-03 Season-Opener, 80-69, At Indianapolis

Indianapolis, Ind. - Senior center Jason Bauer tallied a game-high 18 points, while freshmen guards Jerry Wallace and Courtney James each tallied 16 points in their collegiate debuts to lead the Lakers to an impressive 80-69 road-win Friday night over Indianapolis.

Grand Valley State led 26-23 with 5:42 left in the first half, but the Lakers hit five three-pointers, three by Melvin White and two by Jerry Wallace, to spur a 20-4 run and a 46-27 halftime lead. The Lakers maintained a double-digit lead throughout the entire second half, and built their largest lead (58-36) when Courtney James hit a layup seven minutes into the second half.

Bauer connected on 7-11 shots from the field and 4-4 free throws. Courtney James hit 12-of-14 free throws en route his 16 points, while Jerry Wallace hit was perfect from the field and hit all three of his three-point attempts to net 16 points. Melvin White scored 11 points, including nine in the key first-half run.

The Lakers hit 49 percent of their shots from the field and 75 percent from the charity stripe (24-32). GVSU also outrebounded the Greyhounds 30-28. GVSU (1-0) will be at nationally-ranked Lewis Saturay night.
