GVSU Remains Perfect In GLIAC With 4-2 Win

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State won their first big test in conference action defeating Northwood 4-2 on Sunday at the GVSU soccer field. The Lakers fell behind 1-0 in the second half but responded with four straight goals to earn the win. GVSU entered the game ranked #8 in the Great Lakes Region while Northwood was #5 in the region. The Lakers win improves their record to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in the GLIAC, while Nortwood drops to 9-3 (3-2 GLIAC). GVSU is the only team with a perfect record in the conference and their 10 wins on the seson ties a school record.

The first half was a defensive struggle as both teams were held scorless. Both teams exploded out of the box in the second half as Northwood put the first goal on the board less than five minutes into the half when Toure Galligan put one past GVSU goalie Melissa Henson.

GVSU responded when senior Megan Laudenslager put a rocket into the right corner to even the score. Freshman Jenny Swalec added the next two goals. Swalec's first came off a pass from Katie Rozum and was also rifled into the right corner. The second goal from the freshman was off a penalty kick four minutes later. Mirela Tutundzic added the last GVSU's goal at the 70:50 mark as she beat a couple defenders and slid one past the Northwood goalkeeper. Katie Lange tallied the assist on the Tutundzic goal. Northwood added the last goal on a Margaret Humiecki penalty kick with three minutes left in the game.

The Lakers will go on the road for three games this week starting at Hillsdale on Wednesday (10/23) at 3:00 pm. Then GVSU plays at Mercyhurst on Saturday (10/26) at 3:00 pm and at Gannon on Sunday (10/27) at 1:00 pm.
