Allendale, Mich. -
The Lakers remained the only perfect team in the GLIAC with a 3-1 win over Northern Michigan on Friday at the GVSU soccer field. Grand Valley scored two goals in the last five minutes of the first half to propel them to victory. All three GVSU goals came on free kicks after a Northern Michigan foul. Again it was the freshman providing much of the damage with goals by Jenny Swalec and Mirela Tutundzic while Michelle Versluis scored the last goal. The Lakers improve to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC.
The Lakers dominated much of the first half with Swalec justing missing on several scoring chances, but did not manage a goal in the first 40 minutes of play. After a foul was called on NMU, Trisha Snow crossed a pass that Swalec directed into the left corner for her fourth goal of the season. Less then three minutes later NMU gave the Lakers another free kick. This time Michelle Versluis did not need any help as she scored off the free kick for her second goal of the year to make it 2-0 at the half.
After halftime Northern Michigan came out much more aggressive but it was another free kick at the 58:36 mark that did them in as freshman Katie Rozum hooked up with fellow newcomer Mirela Tutundzic for the final GV goal. Tutundzic has now scored 11 goals for the Lakers, while Rozum picked up her second assist. NMU tallied the last score of the game as Rachel Vilders slid one past Melissa Henson at the 62:53 mark.
The Lakers outshot the Wildcats 21-18 and tallied more shots on goal with a 14-8 advantage. Swalec led the offensive attack with seven shots, six of them on goal. Henson earned the win in goal and improved to 8-2 on the season.
