BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Grand Valley State track & field teams wrapped up the final day at the NCAA Championships in Birmingham, Ala. on Saturday with the Laker women claiming the national runner-up spot with 39 points while the men finished in eighth place with 23 points. During Saturday's portion of the schedule, the Laker women were able to score points for their team score in six events. GVSU's men scored points in three events on the day.
The GVSU women were led by
Angela Ritter's busy day as the junior from Saginaw, Mich. placed in three events on the day. Ritter placed fifth in the 60m dash with a time of 7.51, eighth in the 400m dash with a time of 55.01, and second place in the 4x400m relay alongside
Chant'e Roberts,
Jessica O'Connell, and
Rachael Walters with a time of 3:42.50.
Kendra Foley was able to grab a fourth place finish in the 3000m with a time of 9:29.04. In field events, the Lakers were represented by
Dajsha Avery in the shot put (14.84m, 48' 8.25") and
Kathryn Mills in the high jump (1.70m, 5' 7").
The Laker men's field event successes on Saturday came from
Chris Saikalis in the shot put with a seventh place finish and a distance of 17.75m (58' 3"). In running events, GVSU was led by
Zach Panning's effort in the 3000m as the sophomore put up a time of 8:07.31. The Laker men also put up a seventh place finish in the 4x400m relay team of
TJ Burnett,
Thomas Capers,
Chaz Porter, and
Jaylin Golson with a time of 3:13.48.
GVSU will begin their outdoor season on Friday at the CSU Spring Break Invitational hosted by Charleston Southern in Charleston, SC.
