FINDLAY, Ohio -- The Grand Valley State women's track & field team was able to take home their 18th consecutive GLIAC Championship on Sunday at Findlay, putting up 160.5 points and defeating second-place Hillsdale by 64 points. The Laker men fell short of their eighth straight GLIAC title, placing second behind #2 Tiffin as the Dragons out-paced the Lakers by 36 points to win their first GLIAC title in program history.
GVSU's women were led on Sunday by a string of first-place finishes that stretched their day one lead. Dajsha Avery and
Kathryn Mills were able to take home first-place finishes in field events for the Lakers at the GLIAC Championships. Avery put up a NCAA provisional mark in the shot put (15.18m, 49' 9.5") on her way to a top finish, while Mills posted a NCAA provisional height in the high jump (1.69m, 5' 6.5") on her way to a win in the event. In running events, the Lakers placed nine runners inside the top-three of their respective events and four first-place finishes.
Rachael Walters capped off an excellent season with winning the GLIAC Track Athlete of the Year award while
Angela Ritter earned the most points of any woman athlete at the GLIAC Championships.
The highlight for the GVSU women in running events was the women's 4x400m relay team of
Chant'e Roberts, Ritter,
Jessica O'Connell, and Walters put up a GLIAC Championship meet record and NCAA automatic qualifying time in the event with a time of 3:46.41. The four runners from the 4x400m relay team were not done with their successful day as Roberts was able to take home a first-place finish in the 400m with a NCAA provisional time of 56.42. Walters grabbed a top finish in the 800m with a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 2:09.11. Ritter put up a first-place finish in the 200m and NCAA provisional time of 24.77.
Gina Patterson and
Rachel Bendewald put up second and third place finishes in the Mile with a pair of NCAA provisional times. Patterson ran a time of 4:58.00 and Bendewald put up a time of 4:58.05.
Breanna Luba was able to take third place in the 60m Hurdles with a NCAA provisional time of 8.81. Ritter continued her successful weekend in the 60m dash with a second-place finish and NCAA provisional time of 7.58.
Kendra Foley put up a third-place finish and NCAA provisional time in the 3000m with a time of 9:51.06.
The GVSU men were led by first-place finishes in field events from
Hunter Weeks and
Samora Nesbitt. Weeks put up a NCAA provisional mark in the high jump with a height of 2.15m (7' 0.5") while Nesbitt put up a distance of 15.23m (49' 11.5") that earned him a first-place finish in the triple jump. The Laker runners put up five top-three finishes on Sunday, with
Zach Panning placing second with a NCAA provisional time in the 3000m (8:19.99) and third in the Mile,
Gary Hickman with a second-place finish in the 60m Hurdles with a NCAA provisional time (8.08),
Wuoi Mach placing third with a NCAA provisional time in the 3000m (8:21.64), and the men's 4x400m relay of
TJ Burnett,
Thomas Capers,
Chaz Porter, and
Jaylin Golson placing second with a NCAA provisional time (3:18.06).
The Lakers continue their indoor season in two weeks when they travel to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala.
