BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The 2016 Grand Valley State men's tennis season will see another day as the No. 3 seed Lakers easily handled No. 6 seed Missouri-St. Louis 5-1 at the FSU Racquet & Fitness Center at Ferris State University in the 2016 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament.

The win gives the Lakers a 17-7 record in their eighth consecutive trip to the Midwest Regional Tournament, and puts them just one win away from competing in the NCAA Division II National Tournament for the first time in program history.

The Lakers jumped ahead of the Tritons (17-6), who lost 5-4 to the Lakers on March 26, by winning all three doubles matches.

Nicholas Urban won match three (8-4), giving the Lakers a 3-0 advantage going into singles competition.

In singles play, the Lakers only needed to win two matches to defeat UMSL, earning wins from Phillips in the number two position (6-3, 6-2) and Lescoulie in the number three match (6-4, 6-1). Steenoven, Heiniger, and Urban were still playing and going into third sets when the match was called due to Grand Valley State hitting the required five team points.

The win moves Grand Valley State on to the Midwest Regional Tournament final on Tuesday (May 10) where they will face No. 2 seed Ferris State (22-4) for a spot in the NCAA Division II Tournament in Denver. The Lakers are 0-2 against the Bulldogs this season, losing 6-3 during the regular season and 5-2 in the 2016 GLIAC Tournament final.
