INDIANAPOLIS –For the first time in program history, the Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team has qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament.
Fresh off winning their fourth consecutive GLIAC Tournament title, #10 Grand Valley State has been rewarded with an NCAA Division II Tournament berth for the first time in program history as the fifth seed in the North Region. The fifth-seeded Lakers will take on fourth-seed Dowling on Friday (May 13) at Motamed Field on the campus of Adelphi University in Garden City, New York.
Grand Valley State clinched their first NCAA Tournament bid after going 15-4 overall and 11-1 in the GLIAC during the regular season, winning the regular season title and securing the top seed in the GLIAC Tournament. After receiving a bye to the semifinal, the Lakers handled fourth-seed McKendree with ease as they won 19-8 to advance to the championship game against third-seed Findlay. In the GLIAC Tournament final, the Lakers limited the Oilers to just three goals in the second half to win 20-10 and capture their fourth straight sweep of the regular season and Tournament titles.
Grand Valley State's opponent, ninth-ranked Dowling, enters the 2016 NCAA Tournament sporting a 16-3 overall record and 8-0 conference record to win the East Coast Conference regular season title, earning them their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2011. The Golden Lions earned the top seed in the ECC Tournament, where they defeated Molloy to advance to the championship game. Against LIU Post in the title game, the Golden Lions lost 7-6 for the third year in a row.
The winner of Grand Valley State-Dowling will take on the number one seed in the North Region and back-to-back defending National Champion Adelphi (19-0) on Saturday (May 14) at Motamed Field. In the other half of the North Region bracket, third-seed LIU Post (16-3) will square off against sixth-seed New Haven (13-6) at Ted Grant Field on the campus of second-seed Le Moyne (17-2) in Syracuse, New York. The winner will face the Dolphins on Sunday.
