Women's Golf in Second Place After Day One of NCAA East Super Regional

SPRINGFIELD, Ill.-- The Grand Valley State women's golf team is in second place after the first day of competition at the NCAA East Super Regional, hosted by the University of Illinois-Springfield at Panther Creek Golf Club. GVSU (302) trails first place University of Indianapolis (296) by six strokes at the end of the first day. 

Grand Valley State leads fellow GLIAC school Findlay by two strokes, while Southern Indiana (305) is three strokes back, and GLIAC rival Ashland (315) rounds out the top five. 

The Lakers were anchored by a strong performance from senior Gabrielle Shipley, who carded a 2-under 70 in her first round thanks to an ace on the eleventh hole and four birdies on the day. Her efforts have her in a two way tie for second in the indvidual standings, trailing the University of Findlay's Kasey Petty, who shot a school record 67 (-5) in the opening round.

Julie Guckian ended the day in seventh place in the individual standings, carding a 74 (+2) with two birdies on the day. Freshman Alex Amos carded a 78 (+6) on the day, tying for 16th in the overall standings, while teammates Samantha Moss and Alex Taylor tied for 25th overall with an 80 (+8) to round out the scoring for GVSU. 

The tournament resumes tomorrow, with tee times beginning at 8:30 p.m.
