Broken School Record Highlights First Day of Al Owens Classic

Day One results | Day Two heat sheets

ALLENDALE, Mich. – In their first home meet of the 2016 outdoor season, Grand Valley State had four of their throwers hit NCAA qualifying marks while one set a new school record in the 2016 Al Owens Classic.

With only the hammer, javelin, and triple jumps going on today, there were a combined total of over 300 athletes competing on the men's and women's sides of competition at the GVSU Track & Field Stadium today.

Kyra Hull was the lone Laker female to hit a provisional mark on the day as the junior made a throw of 56.65m (185' 10''), an improvement of her previous best of 54.51m from the WKU Hilltopper Relays and a mark that will place her higher on the NCAA outdoor qualifier list.

The remaining qualifiers came from the men's side of action. Darien Thornton hit an automatic mark in the hammer throw with a school record throw of 68.55m (224' 11''), breaking the record he set last season by .95 meters.

Mike Moon and Jay Lechner were the remaining two Lakers to nab provisional marks today, both coming in the hammer throw. Moon hit a season best distance of 60.67m (199' 0'') while Lechner hit a mark of 53.64m (176' 0''), just short of a season-best for the senior thrower.

Saturday will mark the second and final day of the 2016 edition of the Al Owens Classic. Tomorrow's meet will kick off with the shot put, discus throw and the long jump on the field events at 11 am, while the women's 100m hurdles and men's 110m hurdles will kick off the running events at 11 am.
