PERRY PARK, Ky.-- The Grand Valley State women's golf team put forth a great overall team effort in winning their third straight Perry Park Spring Fling golf event in Perry Park, Kentucky on Sunday. GVSU compiled a 298 team score on the final round, and finished with 896 points overall after shooting a 303 and a 295 in the first and second rounds, respectively.
The Lakers held a comfortable margin of victory, leading second place University of Indianapolis by 11 strokes. The field consisted of 18 teams overall and over 150 golfers in total, and spanned three rounds over two days.
Gabrielle Shipley led the Lakers with a 219 combined score, shooting 75,71 and 73 in her first, second and third rounds.
Alex Taylor was close behind with a 220 (72,74,74), with Alex Amos shooting a 228 (79,73,76),
Julie Guckian finishing with a 229 (77,77,75) and
Samantha Moss rounding out the scoring with a 239 (79,81,79).
"The team played great, especially on the last 36 holes", said head coach
Rebecca Mailloux. "The greens were in rough shape because of the bad weather (temps in the low 30's), but the girls struck the ball really well and gave themselves good opportunities. It was great to have two individuals in the top five and four players in the top 12 overall, while also beating the number one team in the region (U-Indy) by 11 shots."
Shipley's three round placed her in a two way tie with Southern Indiana's Brittanie Garrison for the second highest individual score of the Fling, with University of Indianapolis golfer Brooke Beegle (218) taking the top individual mark.
Alex Taylor (T-4th) also had a top five finish, while Alex Amos and
Julie Guckian both finished within the top 12 individual scores.
