ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Grand Valley State track & field team kicked off their 2016-17 indoor season against good competition and saw several athletes grab NCAA Provisional marks during the season-opening GVSU Holiday Open at the Kelly Family Sports Center on Friday.Â
The GVSUÂ men's team came into the meet ranked fourth while the women entered the meet ranked second in the USTFCCCA Preseason Poll.Â
For the Laker women, there were several NCAA Provisional marks met, including performances from
Angela Ritter (60m),
Rachel Walters (800m),
Rachel Bendewald (3000m),
Tiara Wiggins (60m Hurdles),
Kathryn Mills (High Jump),
Dajsha Avery (Shot Put),
Kyra Hull (Weight Throw), and
Kaylyn Hill (Weight Throw).
Kendra Foley carried over where she left off from her cross country national championship performance to provide an automatic NCAA qualifying time in the 5000m (16:01.53). The time was a Kelly Family Sports Center record and GVSU record.Â
On the men's side, the Lakers were given NCAA Provisional marks by
TJ Burnett (400m),
Trevor Sharnas (5000m),
Samora Nesbitt (Triple Jump),
Chris Saikalis (Shot Put), and
Mike Moon (Weight Throw). Automatic qualifying athletes for NCAA Nationals were
Isaiah Thomas in the Long Jump (7.61m) and
Zach Panning (14:02.23) and
Chris May (14:06.50) in the 5000m run. Panning and Thomas both put up Kelly Family Sports Center records and GVSU records with their performances.Â
The Lakers continue their season on January 13 when they host the GVSU Bob Eubanks Open at the Kelly Family Sports Center.Â
