#2 GVSU Claims Anchor-Bone Classic With 35-23 Victory Over #14 Ferris State

Lakers improve to 6-0 and regain Anchor-Bone Trophy

#2 Grand Valley State regained the Anchor-Bone Trophy Saturday night with a 35-23 victory over #14 Ferris State before a Lubbers Stadium record crowd of 16,889, breaking the previous mark of 16,467 vs. Saginaw Valley State 2009. GVSU improves to 6-0 on the year and snapped the Bulldogs 16-game road winning streak. The Lakers will host Truman State next Saturday at 4 p.m. in its annual Homecoming contest. 

The Laker defense came up with the first big stop of the night after Ferris State had three plays from the GVSU 7-yard line on its first offensive possession. Three consecutive incompletions from QB Reggie Bell was followed by a 24-yard field goal attempt off the foot of Wyatt Ford that sailed wide right. 

The GVSU offense started fast as sophomore QB Bart Williams hit junior WR Brandon Bean for 18 yards, followed by an 18-yard run by senior RB Terrell Dorsey. Williams hit sophomore WR Nick Dodson with a 25-yard completion to the Ferris State 20 yard line and sophomore running back Marty Carter contributed a 6-yard run and an 11-yard reception to set up a 3-yard TD run by Bearn.  Senior place kicker Joel Schipper added the PAT for a 7-0 Laker lead as the 7-play, 80-yard drive consumed 2:52 off the clock. 

The GVSU defense forced a Ferris State three-and-out and the Laker offense was back in action. B. Williams hit senior WR Matt Williams with a key third-down completion, then hit Carter with an 11-yard pass-and-catch. The GVSU playbook opened up as Carter hit junior WR Urston Smith with a perfectly thrown 32-yard TD pass on what started as a run to the left. The left-handed Carter is now 3-for-3 for 77 yards and two TDs in his career. 

The Laker defense continued to play well, holding Ferris State to a pair of field goals after the Bulldogs moved inside the GVSU 20 yard line. Leading 14-6 Williams engineered a 9-play, 79-yard drive that resulted in a 1-yard TD run by Carter to increase the lead to 21-6. Carter carried the ball six times for 63 yards on the drive.

The Laker defense then came up with a big play as senior LB David Talley tipped a Bell pass that sophomore DE Dylan Carroll intercepted. Carroll returned the ball seven yards before fumbling, but redshirt freshman Kalen Dunham recoved the ball in the endzone for a Laker touchdown with just 3:15 left in the second quarter. Schipper added the PAT to up the lead to 28-6. 

GVSU moved to the Ferris State 28 yard line on its opening drive up the second half, but the drive stalled and the Lakers were forced to punt. Ferris State drive 80 yards in six plays for a TD to pull within a 28-13 margin. The Bulldogs added another 

FSU continued to press and scored 10 points on its first two drives in the fourth quarter to pull within five points (28-23) with 8:32 remaining in the game. 

Facing a third-and-nine Williams hit Bean with a key 20 yard completion, then he found Smith with a 21-yard completion. Williams then hit Dodson with a 39-yard TD pass and Schipper hit the PAT to up the lead to 35-23. 

The GVSU defense held one final time as Ferris State drove inside the Laker five yard line, but four downs resulted -8 yards and GVSU ran out the clock for the win. 

Carter toted the ball 28 times for 127 yards and one TD, while passing for another TD. Williams completed 14-of-24 passes for 200 yards and a TD. Dodson hauled in four passes for 92 yards, followed by Smith (3-60, 1 TD), Bean (3-50) and Carter (3-18). 

Schlosser led the defense with 14 tackles, a QB sack and 3.5 TFL (3.5, -4), while Alton Voss added eight tackles, a QB sack and 2.0 TFL (-9). Talley chipped in 1.5 TFL (-9), 1.5 QB sack (-9) and pick off a pass. Sophomoe Dylan Carroll recorded 3.0 TFL (-11), picked off a pass forced a fumble. Senior DL Mark Rosenquist and senior DE Sydney Omameh each recovered a fumble as the Laker defense forced four turnover. Sophomore DB Devin McKissic tallied six pass deflections and recorded six tackles. 

The GVSU defense notched 11 TFL (-33) and 4.0 QB sacks.
