Hartigan Opens NCAA National Championship With Top-25 Finish

Senior recorded pars on 11 of 18 holes on Wednesday

Final Day 1 Results

On Wednesday (May 13), the opening day of the four-day NCAA Division II National Championship at The Meadows golf course in Allendale, senior Kelly Hartigan carded a 79 (+7) to tie for 23rd place in the overall national competition.

The Grand Valley State career wins leader, Hartigan collected 11 pars in the opening round, including seven on the front nine holes. Last Tuesday (May 5), Hartigan captured her second consecutive East Super Regional medalist honor, winning the event and the opportunity to compete one final time on her home course as an individual.

Hartigan has twice competed at the Division II National Championship, tying for 12th place last May and tying for 16th place as a freshman in 2011-12.

She started on the back nine at The Meadows on Wednesday and finished with a +5, closing with pars on holes 14, 16, 17, and 18. Hartigan continued on the front nine and after a bogey on hole one, she pared the next four holes - and seven of the next eight - on her way to a +2 finish on the front nine of the course.

The 11 pars for Hartigan tied for the ninth-most of any player on Wednesday.

Just two players out of the 71 golfers finished the opening round under par. Madison Lellyo of Rollins shot a 70 (-2) to finish as the individual leader, while Limestone's Brittany LaPadula carded a 71 (-1). Indianapolis (+17) sits one shot ahead of Rollins (+18) for the overall team lead.

After teeing off in the second overall individual group at 8:35 a.m. on Wednesday, Hartigan's threesome will be the second-to-last group to go out on Thursday (May 14) with a 10:20 a.m. start
