Team LeaderboardPlayer LeaderboardFacing a four stoke deficit after the first day of the Battle in Belmont in Belmont, Michigan, the Grand Valley State women's golf squad used a strong second day effort to erase the deficit and come away with victory in the event on Monday afternoon.Â
After finishing four strokes behind late entry Michigan State on Sunday with a 314 team score, the Lakers posted a very solid 310 team score, and ended up with a comfortable eight stroke win after the Spartans faltered on their second round.Â
A total of seven teams made up the field.Â
"The girls played well today," said GVSU head coach
Rebecca Mailloux. "I know they wanted to end the season on a high note, and beating Michigan State by several strokes is a great way to end the season."Â
Senior
Gabrielle Shipley was her usual self, posting the low score to lead the Lakers with a 153 total score.
Alex Taylor (156) and
Julie Guckian (156) tied for third in individual scoring with Alex Amos (156), who was competing as an individual.
Samantha Moss (161) and
Danielle Crilley (162) rounded out the scoring for the Lakers, while
Mackenzie Blomberg, also competing as an individual, recorded a (168).Â
"I think what helped us today was a familiarity with the course, with all of our girls having played there before. I think the girls were hungry to go out and prove themselves against a Division I program, and thats what they did.
Alex Taylor's round was real solid today, she played a nice round. Everyone played pretty well today, and managed to limit our mistakes."Â
