EMPORIA, Ks. – This evening, Grand Valley State closed out the penultimate day of competition at the 2026 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The day was highlighted by podium finishes by
Isaac Tavo (men's discus),
Braden Prielipp (high jump),
Owen Westerkamp (3000m steeplechase),
Flynn Pumpa (3000m steeplechase) and
Noah Selvaraj (3000m steeplechase).
Joshua Hurt advanced from the 110m hurdles to the finals and the men's 4x400m relay will make an appearance in tomorrow's finals. Through two days of competition, the men lead competition with 44 points and the women occupy seventh with 11.5.

In men's discus, the first field event of the day,
Isaac Tavo placed fourth for the second consecutive year. After fouling on his first attempt, the sophomore bounced back with a near-best 55.74m (182-10) toss on his next. He exceeded his personal-best on his fifth attempt, throwing for 57.72m (189-4) to solidify a spot on the podium and rank second in GVSU program history.
Braden Prielipp added points to the men's score, as well. The sophomore cleared a bar of 2.10m (6-10.75) on his first attempt at the height to place seventh, contributing two to GVSU's total. In his final outing as a Laker,
Marcus Gelpi cleared 2.05m (6-8.75) to place 12th and earn Second-Team All-America honors.
The men put on a show in the 3000m steeplechase. All four athletes competing in the preliminary advanced to today's finals and made an impact.
Owen Westerkamp led the quad with a finish at 8:53.49. He completed the final 400m in just 1:02.76 to move from sixth to fifth in the event, adding four points to the score.
Flynn Pumpa crossed the finish line next at 8:54.55, finding the sixth place spot on the podium for three more points. Just behind the two was
Noah Selvaraj; he placed eighth with a personal-best finish (again) at 8:54.94 to rank sixth in program history.
Kyler Dean rounded out the quad with a 10th place finish at 9:01.13. The four men combined for eight points in the event.
Joshua Hurt was the sole Laker to advance from an individual preliminary event to the finals. The junior finished second in heat three of the 110m hurdles at 14.15 to advance to tomorrow's finals round, slated for 5:15 p.m. EST.
The men's 4x400m relay squad moved on from the prelims, too.
Aydan McCarey and
Demarcus Chapa combined for a 1:35.95 800m before passing the baton to
Desmond Chapa, who finished the next lap in 47.66.
Joshua Page anchored the relay in just 44.38 to finish at a season-best 3:07.99. The time ranked them eighth overall – just fast enough to move them along to tomorrow's finals.
Grand Valley will compete in a total of 10 events tomorrow, all of which may result in points or individual championship titles for the Lakers. The day begins at 1:30 p.m. EST as
Avery Lahti and
Paige Westra throw in women's shot put. Cam Battjes,
Dolan Gonzales and
Sam Paeth will compete in men's pole vault at 3 p.m. just ahead of
Alexis Weber in women's high jump at 4:15.
Sam Mitas,
Jason Hamilton II,
Sam Coyle and
Joshua Page take the track in the men's 4x100m relay at 4:30 p.m. and
Andrew Berryhill takes the shot put circle at 4:45.
Joshua Hurt takes the starting line in the 110m hurdles finals at 5:15 ahead of Page at 5:35 p.m., who races in the 400m.
