Grand Valley State defeated Edinboro in NCAA quarterfinal action in Canyon, Texas on Thursday evening. The Lakers swept through the Fighting Scots with games scores 30-26, 30-21, 30-22.
The Lakers improve to 32-2 on the season and advance to the Final Four for the second straight season. #4 GVSU will face #10 Truman State (27-8), who defeated #1 West Texas A&M in the quarterfinal, on Friday (Dec. 6) at 8:30 Eastern time.
The Lakers rolled off the first three points of game one but Edinboro fought right back to take the lead. Edinboro maintained an advantage and upped it to 17-12 before GVSU head coach Deanne Scanlon called timeout. After the break, GVSU caught fire and clawed its way back to eventually tie the score at 23 apiece forcing a timeout by Edinboro. The Lakers continued its strong play and outscored the Fighting Scots 4-1 to take a 27-24 and force another EU timeout. GV then finished off the Scots ending game one by a 30-26 margin.
GVSU started out a little slow again in game two before turning up the defense, recording 5 blocks and allowing only nine kills in the match. The Lakers forced Edinboro to hit -.059 in game two while limiting several of their errors that slowed them in the first game.
The Lakers pulled away in the beginning of game three and were never threatened by the Fighting Scots. Carly Miller tallied seven kills in the final game to lead GVSU to a match high 17 kills in the final stanza.
Grand Valley recorded 10 blocks for the match and held Edinboro to a -.045 attack percentage while hitting .227. Miller led the Lakers with 13 kills, while Nicole Bayle added nine kills, and 30 assists. Katie Horvath recorded 13 digs and Elisa Joris registered five blocks to lead the Laker defense.
The Lakers are ranked fourth in the last AVCA poll and are the only team in the tournament to have advanced to the Elite Eight the last three seasons.
