The Chuck Martin radio show will air for the first time before the 2008 season starts on Thursday, Sept. 4. The show will start at 6:00 PM on WTKG AM 1230. The weekly show is hosted by the "voice of Laker Football" Dick Nelson and Steve Lloyd-Jones.

Lakers Complete First Week Of Practice

The #2 ranked Grand Valley State football team completed its first week of drills Saturday with its first two-a-day practice. The Lakers went through two, two-hour practices on the grass practice fields adjacent to Lubbers Stadium. Grand Valley State will continue preparation Monday for the season-opener Saturday, Sept. 6 versus Indianapolis in Lubbers Stadium at 7 p.m.

The Laker wide receivers seem to be following the same path as the rest of the team. The wide outs are talented and need to gain a lot of experience. While that rings true on the surface, this years group does return some players who have been in the system for a while. GVSU lost both starting receivers from a year ago, but they are returning two juniors who have been in Allendale since 2005.

Eric Koehler became the fourth coach on the Grand Valley staff who has connections with Wartburg University (Iowa). Koehler amassed a 16-4 record in two seasons as the head coach at Wartburg. "Coach Koehler did a tremendous job at Wartburg and we are very excited to have him on our staff," said head coach Chuck Martin. "By adding Koehler, along with George Barnett and Jack Ginn, I think we have one of the best offensive coaching staffs since I started at Grand Valley."

Matt Mitchell is taking over the defense for the first year after coaching the linebackers in his first four years in Allendale. Mitchell also serves as the recruiting coordinator for the program. "Mitchell is a great coach and recruiter. I am very confident that our defense is in very good hands," said head coach Chuck Martin.

Last season, three senior linebackers entered camp inked as the starters. With the season opener for 2008 just a few weeks away, fall camp is providing a wide-open position battle for each linebacker on the roster. Assistant coach Matt Yoches summarized the projected depth chart by saying, "It's not anyone's position to lose, but it's everyone's position to gain."

GVSU No. 2 in First AFCA Division II Coaches' Poll

Defending national champion Valdosta State opens the season at No. 1 in the 2008 preseason American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches' Poll.

Valdosta State received 17 of a possible 26 first place votes and will look to win their third national title in five years in 2008. A semifinalist from last year, Grand Valley State received six first place votes and begins the season at No. 2.

After the 2007 season ended, it was obvious there would be some holes to fill on the offensive line. Brandon Barnes, who was named the top lineman in Division II in 2007, graduated along with Joe Wohlscheid and Jacob Henige.

The defensive line returns the most experience on the defensive side of the ball. Senior DL Dan Skuta has been named a preseason all-american by a number of publications after garnering all-american after the 2007 season.

Lakers Report for Fall Camp

The student-athletes who will be leading Grand Valley State into the 2008 season reported for camp today. After checking in with the athletic training staff, the players moved into the dorms and will take part in team activities tonight. The Lakers will officially hold their first practice of the 2008 season on Monday (Aug. 11) afternoon.
